1964: APG is founded in October by 19 people, as the Associação Portuguesa dos Directores e Chefes de Pessoal (Portuguese Association of Managers and Heads of Personnel - APDCP). Its first President was Raúl Caldeira, CUF’s Director of Personnel at the time.
1965: In July is admitted as a rightful member of the European Association for Personnel Management (EAPM), a federation of European Human Resources Associations created a year before by the associations of France, Germany, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
1967: In March, APG organises its 1st National Conference, in the Praia Mar Hotel, in Carcavelos, under the theme “The Perspectives of Personnel Management”, an event that is ever since organised every year (with the only exception in 1973).
1968: Creation of the APG’s North Regional Branch, located at Oporto. Its first President is Nuno Argel de Melo, at the time Personnel Director of Molaflex.
1969: First publication of a small typescript newsletter entitled “Comunicação/Informação” that, in 1975, becomes the “Pessoal” magazine. Nowadays, is a magazine with more than 70 pages, fully coloured.
1973: In June, APG organizes in the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon, the 6th European Congress of Human Resources that joins nearly 1000 participants from across 22 countries, fact which has given it an enormous international prestige. The APG President was Amadeu Castilho Soares.
1976: In June, the association changes its name to Portuguese Association of Human Resources Managers, with the acronym APGTRH. That same year, the association joins the World Federation of Personnel Management Associations (WFPMA).
1978: Creation of the APG’s Centre/South Regional Branch. Its first President is João Perestrello de Vasconcelos.
1990: The Portuguese Association of Human Resources Managers becomes APG, name by which is known.
1992: Creation of the APG’s Trainers Group with Paulo da Trindade Ferreira as its first President. The 1st National Conference of Trainers would be held in 1995.
1994: First publication of the newsletter “Pessoalmente”, an internal newsletter addressed only to members.
1997: In June, APG organizes in Lisbon, one of the biggest European Congresses of Human Resources ever held with nearly 1200 participants. Pedro Mendes is the President. In the following year, APG organizes the FIACYD’s Iberian-American Congress of Training and Development.
2000: In January, APG is recognized as an organisation which pursues public interests by order of the then Prime Minister António Guterres. That same year, it becomes a member of the Rede de Centros de Recursos em Conhecimento (Knowledge Resources Centres Network) (RCRC’S). The national headquarters changes its location from Avenida do Brasil to its present facilities, in Avenida António Augusto de Aguiar, Lisbon.
2003: In May, it organizes another big international event: the IFTDO’s World Congress of Training and Development. More than 750 participants from all over the world meet in Lisbon. In cooperation with the Oeiras Town-Hall, it begins the “Carta de Competências Profissionais do Concelho de Oeiras” (Professional Competences Charter from the Oeiras municipality), a municipal management instrument of great importance which demonstrates the Knowledge of the Human Capital in this municipality. APG is part of the Observatório Nacional de Recursos Humanos (Portuguese Human Resources Watch) together with APQ, QMetrics and Qual.
2004: Celebrates its 40th anniversary and, for that purpose, it organizes several actions, namely the publication of a book celebrating this date.
2005: Creation of the Young Human Resources Managers Group.
2006: Creation of the APG’s HR Awards, in order to increase the importance of the human capital manager’s role within the organizations and to praise his performance.
2007: Creation of the “Code of Ethics on People Management”.
2008: Under the "Leonardo da Vinci" program, APG integrates the transnational project "Hermes-R", coordinated by ESCEM France. It is also a partner of the project "Respons&Ability" and "RSO Matrix" (both EQUAL program) along with various national partners. In the same year join the National Network of Corporate Social Responsibility (RSOpt).
2010: For the first time, APG elects a woman as Chairman of the Board: Margarida Barreto, HR Director of Merck Sharpe & Dohme.
2011: Together with Qmetrics and Mínimos Quadrados, creates the initiative "Best Human Resources Suppliers". The newsletter "Pessoalmente" is being published fortnightly electronic format only.
2012: Statutes are deeply modified and name is changed to APG - Portuguese Association of People Management. The logo is also modified.
2013: It is launched the project "Job for Unemployed". APG, ISCTE and the European partners of the GREAT project organized the "International Conference on Great Lisbon Games & Tech" APG organizes the 1st National Employment Congress.
2014: APG celebrates 50 years of for the occasion creates an Honorary Committee composed of about 70 personalities and chaired by the Portuguese President.
